Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recently released survey from the International Food Information Council Foundation. The survey indicated several "diet disconnects" as an example 90% of Americans say breakfast is an important part of a healthy diet, only 49% actually ate breakfast on a daily basis.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent push by the government to increase the number of people getting flu vaccines.  The government stating that last year only one in five babies and toddlers were vaccinated.  Doug points out the vaccine manufactured each is for the strain that experts "guess" will be the most prevelant.

Dr. Wallach starts today's show discussing arthritis and osteoporosis.  Outlining a story about a woman who had bone on bone arthritis and elected to undergo an experimental treatment involving a genetically engineered virus.  The virus had been engineered to build cartilage.  Unfortunately the woman's body began producing cartilage in her organs.  Resulting in complete organ failure and eventually the woman's death.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning a lawsuit filed by a New York man.  The man had undergone a procedure to insert a donor bone into his neck to alleviate back pain.  After the procedure the man learned that the bone had come from a corpse and had not been screened for disease.  The owner of a company named Biomedical Tissue Services had made deals with several funeral parlor owners to provide him with bones, tendons and heart valves.  The body parts were taken without family consent as the tissue service owner Michael Mastromarino doctored death certificates and forged consent forms.  The removed bones were replace with PVC pipe so the families would not notice.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a recent news article concerning heart disease and colon cancer.  A study has found that those with heart disease are twice as likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer.  Doc contends he's know this for more than 40 years.  Contending that both disease states have two basic causes free radical damage and not enough antioxidants in the diet.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article regarding unapproved prescription drugs.  The article contends approximately 65 million presriptions are written every year for drugs not approved by the FDA.  The problem lies in the fact that every drug submitted to the FDA approval is given a 10 digit "National Drug Code".  Pharmacies can then use the same number to order the drugs from the drug companies.  The FDA admitts that this poses a danger to the public because some of the drugs have already been associated with "adverse events" and even deaths.  Yet the FDA refuses to release the list of unapproved drugs to the public.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the problem of weight gain in children.  Outlining some of the measures schoold systems are using remedy the issue.  Such as the removal of candies, cookies and sweet drinks from school vending machines.  Asserting that school officials are concerned at the decreasing amount of children that take P.E. (physical education) courses.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning corn consumption in the U.S.  One person tested for the article was found to have 69% of the carbon in their hair to be from corn.  This is due to all of the high fructose corn syrup used in almost all processed foods.  Which can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, strokes and type II diabetes.  The author also cited a high amount of soy oils in the American diet known to increase LDL blood levels.

Dr. Wallach discusses the importance of vitamin D3 for good health.  Outlining a recent move by the government to increase the RDA (Recommended Daily Amount) from 400 IU to 2000 IU.  Citing the vitamin's importance in fight cancer and other diseases.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent British study that found sleep loss can lead to heart disease.  The study found that people who get less than 5 hours of sleep nightly had 1.7 fold increased risk of dying from all causes and had more than twice the risk of cardiovascular death.  However, researchers also found that those getting more than 9 hours sleep also had a higher mortality rate.
