Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a recent study on Black Cohosh that found it was not effective in the treatment of post menopause symptoms.  He asks the question of how valid is this study.  Asking how much Blach Cohosh was used in the study?  Where was it grown?  Contending that the study was not a fair assesment of Blach Cohosh.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent news story concerning the beneficial effects of certain herbs and spices.  Doug contends that once the efficacy of a natural compound is verified drug companies try to determine the mechanism so drugs can be made.  The being that natural compounds can't be patented but synthetic compounds can be patented.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a recent Harvard study that predicts the Avian flu could kill 350,000 Americans and millions more worldwide.  Asserting that if people get on a nutritonal plan now that bolsters their immune system they can reduce their risk of getting flus.   Ben also discusses the importance of vitamin A in the diet.  Explaining the difference between betacarotine and vitamin A.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, Beth Israel Medical Center and Wageningen University in the Netherlands.  The study found that moderate drink of alcohol may reduce the risk of heart attacks in men.  But the study cautioned that more than two drinks a day did not give the same result.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a recent USA Today article that outlined a report regarding medical mistakes.  The report states that 15 million Americans are harmed each year by medical mistakes and not a single OSHA ticket is written.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a Florida woman who was the victim of a medical mistake.  The women went into a regional medical center in Orlando, FL to deliver a baby.  After complications with the birth the woman came out of the hospital 12 days later as a quadruple amputee.  Other than telling the woman she contracted flesh eating bacteria the hospital refuses to give her any more information on what happend.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding the "Blue Zone".  This zone is an area in northwestern Costa Rica where residents live much longer than those in other parts of Costa Rica.  The researchers aren't really sure why this is but suspect in could be something in the water.  The article also mentions that in this area women still use wood fires to cook thier food.  Doc contends they most likely put the wood ashes into their gardens.  Thus giving them nutrients in the food grown in those gardens.
