CA MEAT REGULATIONS DEBATED- 08-18-14 8:00 SG

CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS ARE POISED TO PASS A BILL PROHIBITING THE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN CATTLE AND POULTRY. THE LEGISLATION, WHICH CLEARED THE SENATE LAST WEEK, WOULD AIM TO PREVENT SICKNESS AND DEATH CAUSED BY DRUG-RESISTANT BACTERIA IN FOOD-PRODUCING ANIMALS. ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND CONSUMER ADVOCACY GROUPS ARGUE THE LEGISLATION STILL ALLOWS VETERINARIANS TO OVERPRESCRIBE DRUGS TO FARMERS.     ADDITIONALLY SB835 WOULD NOT TRACK THE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN ORDER TO MEASURE THE LAW’S IMPACT.    THE BILL NOW REQUIRES GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN’S SIGNATURE.
