Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing medical errors. Outlining how the U.S. spends more on health care than all of the other industrialized countries put together.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent report from the independent health care ratin company HealthGrades. The report looked at 40 million Medicare hospitalization records for a 3 year time frame. Finding that 1.16 million patients experienced "patient safety incidents". Of those in the study who experienced an error 25% had a chance of dying. These errors also cost hosptials 8.6 billion dollars over the three year period.

Dr. Wallach starts today's show discussing various forms of dementia.    Citing a recent news article concerning aging and memory loss that asserts there is nothing to be done.  Doc disagrees contending that their are several proactive stategies that can be employed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and other dementias.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news articles.  The first concerns a study that found obese and overweight people are 50% more likely to get asthma than those of normal weight.  The second article regards a new report concern the efficacy of starting regular mamograms at age 40.  The new report contends that women who are a lower risk (without a family history) should wait until age 50.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news stories concerning drugs withdrawn from the market.  The first concerns the drug Permax marketed by Valeant.  The drug is currently being taken by thousands Parkinson's patients and has been linked heart valve damage.   Second Doug and Doc discuss Zelnorm a drug marketed by Novartis AG and given to people with chronic constipation.  Zelnorm has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding a research study on food advertising to children.  The study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 40% of the food ads seen on TV by children were for candies, snacks and fast food.  Some children seeing over 7600 snack and fast food ads every year.
