Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the vast amount of deaths and injuries that occur in hospitals and clinics across the U.S. each year.  A recent US News and World Report study found that each year some 15.8 million people are harmed in some way by the medical industry.  Yet not one single OSHA ticket has been written while the same cannot be said for other industries where injuries and deaths occur.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of news articles concerning doctors in trouble with the law.  The first article regards a doctor who along with two office managers illegally distributed 1.5 million Oxycontin pills over a 5 year time period.  The second article concerns a doctor who fraudulantly tried to get control of her dead boy friend's bank accounts and business.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne discusses a recent news article regarding deformed fish.  Researchers found the fish had high levels of hormones absorbed from the waters in which they swam.  The hormones are now found in the oceans and waterways and the source is pharmaceuticals.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent study that found a link between Omega-3 fatty acids and lowered blood pressure.  Researchers surveyed nearly 5000 people ages 40-59 in Japan, China, Britain and the U.S. regarding their dietary habits.  Those who ate more foods such as fish, nuts and seeds rich in Omega-3's overall averaged lower blood pressures.

Dr. Wallach returns from his trip to Japan.  Citing a recent news article in a Japanese health publication that discusses the state of the healthcare system in Japan.  Although the Japanese always rank higher in health and longevity the aritcle pointed to several areas where the Japanese system is starting to mirror the U.S. system.  The article also outlines several areas where the U.S. system is "broken".

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine.  The first located in the Netherland found that 75% of people surveyed who had sciatic nerve problems found the malady improved without surgery.  The second study found that 75% of people who elected to decline surgery for degenerative spondylolisthesis were able recover.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben outlines his credentials as a skin care expert asserting that many skin problems are signs of other more serious health challenges.  Also outlining various nutritional strategies for combating these health challenges.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a couple of recent research studies on flax seed and ginseng combating cancer.  The studies both funded by government agencies were looking for any health benefits from these supplements in treating cancer.  The flax seed study found that after taking 30 grams of flax seed for 30 days cancer cell growth was slowed by 30-40% when compared to the control group.  In the ginseng study after taking either 1000 mg or 2000 mg daily patients reported fatigue symptoms were "moderately better" or "much better" by 25% and 27% respectively.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing HRT (hormone replacement therapy) asserting that there are better ways to control the symptoms of menopause.  Contending that estrogen creates stress in the body while progesteron relaxes the body.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recently released survey from the International Food Information Council Foundation.  The survey indicated several "diet disconnects" as an example 90% of Americans say breakfast is an important part of a healthy diet, only 49% actually ate breakfast on a daily basis.

Not only to prevent birth defects but to aid in other mechanisms within the human body.  Also discussing the effects of high blood levels of homocysteine and an increased risk of atherosclerosis.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent GAO (Government Accounting Office) report that states 51% of all FDA approved drugs later require label changes for side effects.  Of that percentage 3 to 4 percent are eventually pulled off the market.
