Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the government's announcement that Medicare will no longer pay for medical mistakes.  Under federal law the hospitals will have to pay for the mistakes and cannot pass the cost along to the patient.  Doc asserts that every American should educate themselves and become their own "health advocate".

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discusses two recent news articles concerning viruses.  The first article concerns research that is attempting to link obesity to a virus called "adenovirus 36".  The virus is in the same family of viruses that cause colds and pink eye in humans.  The second article is regarding research involving the H5N1 avian flu virus.  The researchers have been examining the avian flu virus looking for specific mutations that a virus needs in order to become a pandemic.  They have determined that at least 13 of these changes will need to occur to make the virus deadly.  So far in human cases studied the virus has only made two or three of these changes.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing medical mistakes.  This in light of a recent news release from the government stating that Medicare starting next year will no longer pay for medical mistakes.  The mistakes such as infections, wrong-site-surgeries, wrong drugs etc. will be paid for by hospitals.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news articles.  The first concerns problems with the 2006 FDA mandate requiring food manufactorers to state trans fat levels in packages.  Under the rules the package can claim "no trans fats" only if levels are less than a half gram per serving.  The problem is that most packages contain more than one serving and people often eat two to three servings at a time.  Second Doug and Doc discuss a recent report that claims deer hunting is harder on the heart that walking on a treadmill.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the importance of preparedness.  Asserting that whether it be natural disasters such as fires, earthquakes, floods or storms it is important that we all be prepared for emergency situations.  Doc outlines several strategies for remaining prepared for impending disasters.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning and FDA warning.  The FDA is warning parents against giving children under the age 2 over-the-counter cough and cold remedies.  This warning prompted by an increasing number of injuries and deaths by the misuse of these products.  Some health advocates are calling for these products to be made prescription.

Dr. Wallach begins today's show mentioning the recent drops in the stock market.  An indicator that the economy is slowing which could mean companies could start cutting back on employee benefits such as health care.  Doc recommends starting a Youngevity home-base business to offset any potential income losses.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news story concerning doctor patient relationships.  In the article doctors and researchers give examples of indications in might be time for the patient to seek another doctor's advice.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne starts the show discussing a recent study that found vitamins C and E were good for heart function for some people.  But all of the mainstream media outlets looked at the study and lumped all of the numbers together and stated that these vitamins did nothing.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss two recent news articles.  The first concerns the new "black box" warning on the diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos.  Although an FDA advisor recommended removing the drugs from the market the FDA elected to just add the warning about increased risk of heart failure.  Second they discuss a German study that found eating fast food "healthy alternatives" had the same damaging effects on the cardiovascular system as did the regular fast food items.

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing the new line of products from Youngevity's "Projoba" company.  Outlining the importance of weight loss in avoiding the metabolic syndrome, a precurser to diabetes.  Specifically recommending the "Slim Cow" product from Projoba.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news story concerning the halting of a gene therapy clinical trial.  The trial of an arthritis drug has been halted following the death of one of the more than 100 participants.  The drug is a genetically modified virus that is supposed to block the inflammation of joints associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
