Nurse JoAnn Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  JoAnn discusses a recent news story concerning recent action by the Federal Trade Commision. The FTC fined four marketers of weight loss products. The FTC contending the companies made false unsubstantiated claims that were not backed by science.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and JoAnn Conaway discuss a couple of news stories concerning weight gain.  The first story is regarding research done by the University of Iowa College of Medicine that found adults living with children tend to eat more fats than those not living with children.  The second story outlines data found by Finnish researchers indicating people with pets tend to be heavier, less active and in poorer health than those without pets.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a report of finding the H5N1 avian flu in England.  Asserting that this is an indication the virus is moving westward.  Doc outlines a several ways for people to prepare themselves for the possible impending pandemic.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news articles.  The first concerns the FDA's approval of an new over-the-counter weight loss drug.  Next Doc and Doug disucss a new report from the CDC that indicates the rate of autism in American is even higher than previously estimated.

Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a recent study on Black Cohosh that found it was not effective in the treatment of post menopause symptoms.  He asks the question of how valid is this study.  Asking how much Blach Cohosh was used in the study?  Where was it grown?  Contending that the study was not a fair assesment of Blach Cohosh.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent news story concerning the beneficial effects of certain herbs and spices.  Doug contends that once the efficacy of a natural compound is verified drug companies try to determine the mechanism so drugs can be made.  The being that natural compounds can't be patented but synthetic compounds can be patented.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a recent Harvard study that predicts the Avian flu could kill 350,000 Americans and millions more worldwide.  Asserting that if people get on a nutritonal plan now that bolsters their immune system they can reduce their risk of getting flus.   Ben also discusses the importance of vitamin A in the diet.  Explaining the difference between betacarotine and vitamin A.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, Beth Israel Medical Center and Wageningen University in the Netherlands.  The study found that moderate drink of alcohol may reduce the risk of heart attacks in men.  But the study cautioned that more than two drinks a day did not give the same result.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a recent USA Today article that outlined a report regarding medical mistakes.  The report states that 15 million Americans are harmed each year by medical mistakes and not a single OSHA ticket is written.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a Florida woman who was the victim of a medical mistake.  The women went into a regional medical center in Orlando, FL to deliver a baby.  After complications with the birth the woman came out of the hospital 12 days later as a quadruple amputee.  Other than telling the woman she contracted flesh eating bacteria the hospital refuses to give her any more information on what happend.
