In areas of the north eastern and southern regions of the U.S. less than 7% of hospitals received a "top-performing" rating. Researchers estitmate that if all hospitals were performing at the same high level more than 260,000 lives could have potentially been saved. The best performing hospitals were in the northern midwest regions of the country.
