Dr. Wallach discusses the importance of people educating themselves about their own healthcare.  Contending the more knowledge one has about health the easier it will be to make educated decisions regarding health.  Doc outlines several resources where people can find the information they need to make informed healthcare decisions.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news articles the first concerns billing practices of some California hospitals.  A recent report from a two year study found that hospitals charged uninsured low income patients up to threes more than what they were charging private insurers or government programs such as Medicare.  The second story comes out of China and concerns patients and relatives reactions to hospital overcharges and fraud.  The Chinese people began attacking doctors, nurses and healthcare workers at such an alarming rate the government is sending police into hospitals to protect the workers.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news stories.  The first concerns a New York Times piece that found doctors are being paid millions of dollars in "rebates" for pushing anemia drugs.  A second story concerns two recent studies published in the Journal of the America Medical Association.  The studies found that drug coated stents are being used for "off-label" procedures at an alarming rate.

Nurse JoAnn Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  JoAnn discusses a recent study that found bad hand writing by doctors on prescription pads is literally killing over 7000 Americans each year.  Contending that it is bad enough that doctors often overprescribe or different drugs having adverse reactions but the fact paitents are dying because of bad hand writing is unforgivable.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and JoAnn Conaway discuss a news story about the maker of Oxycontin being fined.  The FDA approved Oxycontin to be dosed every 12 hours but found the drug maker Purdue Pharma was encouraging doctors to write prescriptions for use every 8 hours.  So the FDA fined Purdue 19.5 million dollars to be divided among 26 different states to help them deal with addictions to the drug.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing weight gain and obesity.  Asserting that diets and exercise do not treat the root cause.  Contending that binge eating and the munchies are actually caused by nutritional deficiencies.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding a research study done at the University of South Carolina.  The study found that women who ate the most grilled, smoked and processed red meats had a 47% increased risk of developing breast cancer.  Those that ate the grilled and smoked meats without eating a lot of fruits and vegetables had a 74% increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news stories.  The first concerns the story of a man in Britain that was told he had pancreatic cancer and had six months to a year to live.  So the man quits his job, stops paying his bills and goes travelling.  A year later the man was still alive and a second test gave him a clean bill of health.  Doug asserts that this story illustrates the importance of getting second opinions.  Next Doc and Doug discuss a news article concerning hazardous hospital waste that ended up in the local land fill.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent published report that found the busiest hospitals often had the most "adverse patient events".  In fact at one hospital for every 10% increase in patient-to-nurse ratio the adverse event ratio rose 28%.
