(09:35) Santa Cruz County - Caltrans announced a portion of Highway 35 in Santa Cruz County will be fully closed today. Due to the damages created by the winter storms, Highway 35 will be closed between Gist Road and Black Road for paving. Crews will be working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today . According to Caltrans, Residents North of this closure may detour by using Black Road, while residents South of the closure may use Bear Creek Road
(09:15) Santa Cruz - During a vehicle stop, police found a Santa Cruz man in possession of drugs and thousands of dollars in cash on Friday. Bradley Kellman was pulled over for having an expired registration. During the stop police learned Kellman was on probation with active search terms for narcotics and was driving while on a suspended license for DUI. Police uncovered over $1,000 in cash, packaging Material for drug sales, 6.3 grams of Methamphetamine, Electronic Scale , Several knives and CS Tear Gas. Kellman was arrested for probation violations, driving under a suspended license, transporting, selling and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
(07:45) Monterey County - Firefighters put out two separate fires in South Monterey County yesterday. Cal Fire reported that the first fire started at 11:30 a.m. in the King City area near the intersection of Highway 101 and Jolon Road. The three acre grass fire included an area adjacent to the base of a power pole. A second fire in the foothills, east of the Soledad City limits, was reported a short time later. The Fire grew to eight acres. Firefighters reported that the grass fire started due to the sparks from the grinding and cutting tools that workers were using. There were no reports of injuries or structure damage in either incident. Cal Fire wants to remind the public that wildfire season is approaching and firefighters are asking residents to be aware of current weather conditions as well as to be cautious when using power tools.
(07:20) King City - King City Police is seeking the public’s help finding the people involved in a 2016 homicide. Police released a surveillance picture of a possible suspect vehicle. It is a black, late model GMC Chevrolet or similar pickup. Investigators reported that the truck was spotted driving by the home where Martin Heredia was killed on June 7, 2016. Two people were later seen running to the truck after the homicide. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the authorities.
A motorcyclist died this afternoon as the result of a crash on southbound Highway 101. The man, who was in his late 20’s, suffered fatal injuries when his bike collided with a truck. The accident occurred just south of Gilroy, and north of Highway 25, near Mesa Road.
A Salinas man has been found guilty of indecent exposure, interfering with a business, and loitering. 41 year-old Kenneth Yokomizo exposed himself to a group of people who were preparing for a July 4th parade at the Salinas Rodeo Grounds, and a few days later he did the same thing at a snack bar in Salinas. Yokomizo is scheduled to be sentenced May 17th.
Residents and the owners of small businesses, impacted by the February 1st through 25th storms, can still apply to the Small Business Administration for assistance. The filing deadline for property damage is may 19th, and the deadline for economic injury assistance is next December 20th.
A 4-time world heavyweight champion boxer was in the Monterey bay area over the weekend. In fact Evander Holyfield toured several churches in Monterey county. He hopes to inspire people to have faith and persevere, and he also said that both success and failure start at home.
