(9:00) Aptos: Congressman Jimmy Panetta announced on Tuesday that Aptos-based FarmLink will receive a nearly six thousand dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These funds awarded through USDA’s Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, will be used to train local up and coming farmers as well as to help them access land, capital and marketing opportunities. In the 18 years since its inception FarmLink has helped more than 700 aspiring farmers and landowners in creating and sustaining successful farm businesses in the 20th Congressional District.

(10:20) Santa Cruz - Judge, John Salazar, has increased the bail amount for a Santa Cruz Neurosurgeon and 2 nurses who are accused of child sex abuse.   A new arraignment was held this morning in Santa Cruz for 57 year-old Dr. James Kohut, Watsonville Nurse, 43 year-old Rashel Brandon and an Arizona Nurse, 30 year-old Emily Stephens.   Upon re reviewing video footage, county officials have increased the initial charges against all 3 defendants and have increased bail to 15 million dollars each.   Kohut is currently accused of 43 different charges.    While Brandon and Stephens are facing 40 charges each.    A preliminary hearing is scheduled to be held on March 12th.   

(06:50) Monterey - The Monterey County Food Bank held its annual meeting yesterday.  This meeting is held every year to discuss the best ways to feed as many hungry people as possible.   The Food Bank maintains the situation is currently dire, with Monterey currently ranking 58th out of 58 counties for food insecurity.   Congressman Jimmy Panetta was the keynote speaker at the event.   Congressman Panetta, who is a member of the U.S. Agriculture Committee, spoke about the importance of food distribution, nutrition, and his goals for the county.   Last year the food bank donated over 10 million pounds of food to 150 non-profits in monterey county alone.

(06:25) Pacific Grove - The city of Pacific Grove is implementing stricter parking enforcement measures.  This new license plate recognition has been added to its parking scooter.  Monterey officials hope that this new technology will help make their employee’s job easier and more efficient.  This technology ensures that no tickets will be issued by mistake.  Right now this technology has only been implemented on one parking scooter; there are currently no plans yet to add license plate recognition to any others.

A  27  year-old  man  was  arrested  after  he  led  Salinas  police  officers  on  a  vehicle  and  foot  chase  last  night  in  Salinas.   Kailas  Dahl  sped  away  after  he  saw  a  police  vehicle  as  he  cut  off  a  semi-truck  at  the  intersection  of  Market  and  Salinas  Streets.   The  vehicle  chase  ended  when  Dahl’s  vehicle  hit  another  one,   after  he  went  through  a  stop  sign.    Dahl  then  tried  to  flee  on  foot  but  was  caught.   He  was  booked  into  Monterey  County  Jail,   on  a  variety  of  felony  charges.

A  “long  period  swell”,  that  has  brought  8-10  foot  wave  swellssneaker  waves,  and  rip  currents  is  expected  to  continue  through  tomorrow  night.   The  rough  waves  exist  between  Monterey  and  Sonoma  counties.   Locally,  some  of  the  beaches  that  can  be  expected  to  be  seriously  impacted  are  those that  face  northwest,   such  as  Asilomar  State Beach  and  Marina  State  Beach.

2  thousand  marijuana  plants  were  discovered  on  Bureau  Of  Land  Management  land  in  San  Benito  County.    While  searching  the  grow  site,  San  Benito  County  Sheriff’s  deputies  discovered  2  suspects  who  fled  the scene.    One  was  arrested,  and  the  other  ditched  a  loaded  firearm  while  being  pursued  through the  brush.  That  person  is  still  being  sought.

A  magnitude  3.2  earthquake  occurred  in  the  San  Juan  Bautista  area  today.     it  was  epi-centered  less  than  10  miles  from  Hollister  and  11  miles  from  Salinas.    There  have  been  no  reports  of damage connected  with  the  9:16  a.m.  seismic  event.
