An estimated 200,000 honey bees were killed recently. Vandals reportedly tipped over 100 beehives, and sprayed the bees with diesel fuel. The incident took place Saturday at a property along Echo Valley Road in Prunedale. Anyone with information about the perpetrators is encouraged to contact the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.
A body was recovered from the ocean off of Moss Landing Harbor today. A fisherman first spotted the body about 200 yards off Moss Landing Beach. Investigators are still working to determine how the person died, however, foul play is not expected.

(06:10) Santa Cruz County - The California Highway Patrol is offering a traffic safety program for teenage drivers and their parents. The Start Smart Program is aimed at helping future and newly licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The Smart Start class is free of charge and will be held on Monday, January 29 from 6:30pm-8:00pm at the Aptos Library, located at 7695 Soquel Drive, in Aptos. (06:00) Salinas - A man was arrested after he attempted to rob another man at gunpoint in Salinas. The incident took place last night on the 700 block of Elton Place. Authorities reported that the victim was uninjured. The suspect was booked into Monterey County Jail.
A Monterey man has been chosen to be on the U.S. Olympics Bobsled Team for the upcoming Olympic Games in South Korea. 32 year-old Nick Cunningham found out today that he’ll be 1 of the 3 men selected to pilot 1 of the 3 USA Sleds. Cunningham is a 2-time Olympian, as a push athlete in the 2010 Vancouver Games, and as a pilot in 2014 at the Sochi Games.
The Walgreens on Front Street in Santa Cruz was evacuated this morning. That after flames were reported shooting about 10 feet in the air from a truck (which was parked almost directly in front of the entrance to the store). The store was closed for about 45 minutes. Firefighters determined there was no damage to the store, and no one was injured in the incident.
One surfer was rescued by another after the first lost his board and got trapped against a rocky cliff near Santa Cruz this morning. The incident at Steamer Lane, was reported around 10:30 this morning. Beginners are encouraged not to surf this week, due to the high surf.
