Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Nutritional Pharmacist Melissa Golladay fills in for Dr. Joel Wallach. Beginning the show discussing her background and how she came to become a nutritional pharmacist. Watching patients take drugs and slowly get worse over time. Stating that people are eating poor diets without nutrients. This will cause them to burn through their nutrients more rapidly.

Doug Winfrey and Melissa Golladay a news article about a study depression. In this small study of 67 subjects who were clinically depressed. All involved had unhealthy diets with low intakes of fruits and vegetables, little fiber and lots of sweets, processed meats and salty snacks. Half of the subjects were put on a healthier diets focusing on extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, eggs, fruits, vegetables, fatty fish and grass fed beef. The other half remained on their unhealthy diets. After three months the subjects symptoms were graded on a depression scale. Those on the healthy diet saw scores improve. In fact 32% scored low enough they were no longer considered depressed. The other group saw little to no improvement.

Finding those eating 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer and early death. Reducing heart disease risk by 24%, stroke 33%, cardiovascular disease 28%, cancer 13% and a 31% reduced risk of premature death.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of gluten free products. Researchers at the University of Illinois surveyed nearly 7500 people regarding their dietary habits. The people who ate a gluten free diet were tested for levels of arsenic and mercury. Because many of the gluten free products use rice flour. Previous studies have found a link between toxic metals and rice flour via fertilizers, soil and water. Researchers found the gluten free group had twice the levels of arsenic and 70% higher levels of mercury compared to the non-gluten free diet people.
