COASTAL COMMISSION AND UCSC – 03/07/12 08:30 S.S

The  STATE  COASTAL  COMMISSION HAS  SAID  IT  MAY  CHIME  IN  ON   U.C.S.C.’S PLAN  TO  EXPAND  the  USE  OF  CITY  WATER  AND  SEWER  SERVICES  ON  CAMPUS.     THAT’S  BECAUSE  OF  THE  POSSIBLE  IMPACT  ON  FISH  HABITAT  OFF  THE  CENTRAL  COAST.      AUTHORITIES   WITH  FEDERAL  AND  STATE   FISHERIES  AGENCIES  HAVE  ALREADY  SUGGESTED  THAT  L.A.F.C.O.  DELAY  ITS  FINAL  APPROVAL,   UNTIL THE  AGENCIES  CAN  WORK  OUT  A  PLAN  WITH  THE  CITY  TO   REBUILD  the  SALMON  HABITAT,  AND  REDUCE  WATER DIVERSION  FROM  the  SAN  LORENZO  RIVER  AND  NORTH  COAST  STREAMS.

the  COASTAL  COMMISSION (WHICH  DOES  NOT  NORMALLY  GET  INVOLVED  WITH   ISSUES  OUTSIDE  THE  COASTAL  ZONE),  MAY  GET  INVOLVED  WITH  THIS ISSUE  BECAUSE  THE  AFFECTED  FISH  ARE  CONSIDERED  A  COASTAL  RESOURCE.

A  LAFCO  HEARING  TO  FINALIZE  THE  APPROVAL  IS  SET TO  BEGIN  AT  9:30  THIS  MORNING….AT  THE  SANTA  CRUZ  GOVERNMENT  CENTER  ON  OCEAN  STREET  IN  SANTA  CRUZ…..ROOM   525.

The university has requested up to 100 million gallons more water each year to support new housing and other buildings — as outlined in a pact with the city and county — if student growth hits a projected maximum of 19,500 by 2020, about 3,000 more than what it is now.
