Attorneys for homeless advocates and the City of Santa Cruz will appear in San Jose federal court (at 9 AM) this morning seeking some sort of decision on the future of the Gateway Plaza homeless encampment downtown.
The camp has been ordered closed earlier this week by a state superior court judge who cited health and safety dangers at the camp. A new camp has been partially constructed in the San Lorenzo Benchlands, but it is not yet fully operational and is, in any case, scheduled to close at month’s end.
Homeless advocates who filed a federal suit that has so far delayed city action, want more permanent and more indoor options for the homeless.
We may know more later today.
