Coastal portions of Northern California were issued evacuation notices early this morning due to the tsunami warning issued at around 1:30 a.m. by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. The warning was sparked by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan. Santa Cruz County officials issued evacuation notices via a reverse 911 call to about 6,600 people at 6:30 a.m. this morning in low lying areas along the coast, as well as along beaches and lagoons.
