Catalytic converter thefts 12/20/11 6:25p.m. TDH

Several catalytic converters were stolen around santa cruz county last night and Sunday night.  It is the latest of a series of recent the thefts.   The car parts, which modify exhaust, are often sold as scrap metal.   2 Sunday thefts occurred in soquel on the 5-thousand block of wilder drive, where toyota 4Runners were targeted.    Other thefts occurred in capitola and the west side of santa cruz.    As a holiday gift, Toyota of santa cruz is offering to modify catalytic converters for free.   Those interested are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the second harvest food bank, or an unwrapped toy (for toys for tots).  Through January, the dealership at 42-hundred auto plaza is offering to weld the converters to vehicles, and engrave the vehicles’ license plate number on the converter.
