The 2nd phase of the restoration at the Carmel Mission has begun. This phase works on the Downie Museum and Basilica Courtyard. The restoration project is slated to be complete by the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Carmel Mission (which took place back in 1771). The first phase of the project began in November 2020 and was complete at the end of March. It included the relocation of the main restrooms located in the Downie Museum to a new facility in the central courtyard. In addit ion to the seismic work, interior wall s will be opened to expand the museum exhibit space and add 2 new restrooms (in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act). They’ll be added to the west side of the museum.
