Carmel is the last city in Monterey County to become a Purple Heart City. The Purple Heart Trail is a system of symbolic roads, bridges, highways, and other monuments that honor those who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. Segments of the national roadway have been designated as the Purple Heart Trail with signs throughout 45 states and Guam. Sand City and Monterey County joined the national movement last year.
