Camp Phoenix, otherwise known as “The Ross Camp” has reportedly been dismantled as of this morning. The dismantling was done by Santa Cruz City Police and County Park Rangers. There was a large attendance of neighbors gathered to watch as it unfolded.
Alise Casby, a witness to this event told KSCO that she watched as police confiscated tents, a portable toilet, and various belongings from residents of Camp Phoenix.
Casby also went on to state that only after she spoke out against these actions did the city officials at the former Camp Phoenix start offering vouchers to those displaced.
Another witness, Dave Wilson, also told KSCO that this was a “violation of civil rights” and claimed that these actions “exposed the city of santa cruz to another lawsuit”, also calling the city manager “out of control” for allegedly ordering this eviction.
KSCO reached out to Santa Cruz city manager Martin Bernal’s office. At time of writing, his office has yet to comment on this matter.
