STATE PROSECUTORS HAVE REACHED A $2.7 MILLION SETTLEMENT WITH A U.S. RETAIL COMPANY. OVER 30 CALIFORNIA COUNTIES SUED THE PARENT COMPANY OF MARSHALLS AND TJ MAXX OVER VIOLATIONS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE LAWS. THE CIVIL COMPLAINT WAS FILED AGAINST TJX COMPANIES INCORPORATED IN 2011 FOLLOWING AN INVESTIGATION BY THE MONTEREY COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH BUREAU. INVESTIGATORS FOUND A MARSHALL’S FACILITY IMPROPERLY DISPOSING OF FLUORESCENT LAMPS CONTAINING MERCURY. SIMILAR VIOLATIONS WERE DISCOVERED THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THE SETTLEMENT WILL REQUIRE THE COMPANY TO KEEP RECORDS DOCUMENTING COMPLIANCE.
