California is now the second state that has recorded more than 1 million cases of COVID-19. This is a grim milestone that comes on the heels of a surge in cases nationwide and tightened restrictions in several Northern California counties.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, as of today (Thursday), California had at least 1,000,631 confirmed COVID cases and 18,126 deaths related to the virus.

On Wednesday, Texas became the first state in the U.S. to top 1 million cases.
