CONSERVATIONISTS HAVE PETITIONED TO REINTRODUCE GRIZZLY BEARS INTO CALIFORNIA. THE CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY HAS FILED THE PETITION WITH THE U-S FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, ARGUING THE SPECIES’ SURVIVAL IS AT RISK DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE. WARMER TEMPERATURES ARE DAMAGING THE WHITE-BARK PINE TREES THE BEARS RELY ON FOR NUTRITION. THE CBD PROPOSES RE-INTRODUCING THE BEAR THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORIC TERRITORIES IN CALIFORNIA, AS WELL AS ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO, AND UTAH. THE BEAR HAS NOT BEEN SIGHTED IN CALIFORNIA SINCE 1924.
