STATE RESEARCHES HAVE REPORTED THE CALIFORNIA BLUE WHALE POPULATION IS NEARLY BACK TO PRE-WHALING LEVELS. A STUDY RELEASED FRIDAY IN THE JOURNAL MARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE, REVEALED THE CURRENT POPULATION IS UP TO 97% OF HISTORICAL FIGURES. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF BLUE WHALES WAS PREVIOUSLY ESTIMATED TO BE AROUND 2,200. THE HUNTING OF THE WHALE WAS BANNED IN 1966.
