All public schools in Santa Cruz County will be closed next week – March 16th-20th because of the coronavirus outbreak. The decision was made Thursday in anticipation of an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Santa Cruz County over the coming days.
The decision to close all schools was made by school district superintendents and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education after consultation with the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency.
The decision will be reassessed next week as to whether an extension of school closures beyond March 20th will be necessary.
In a statement, Santa Cruz County Public Health Officer, Dr. Gail Newel, said that while the number of cases in Santa Cruz County remains small at this time, the Public Health Division expects those numbers to grow significantly in the coming days and weeks.”
As of this (Friday) morning, there are 7 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Santa Cruz County.
