A requirement within in the Affordable Care Act has wine makers worried. The requirement would necessitate publishing a calorie count on wine purchased in restaurants. Wine makers are pushing the FDA to allow for a calorie range instead of a specific number, saying the cost to test for more detailed caloric information could be as much at $500 per wine. This requirement would only apply to restaurants where wine is ordered off an alcohol menu and would not apply to wine ordered at a bar or purchased from stores.
