areas of critical habitat have been established for the endangered black abalone. these areas range from pacific grove south to cayucos and san francisco bay south to natural bridges state beach. the once prevalent marine snail’s population has dropped dramatically since the 1980’s, due to disease, warming of coastal waters, and overfishing.
