"The abrupt firing of some of the finest talent in the talk radio industry by the new clueless corporate suits at KGO last Friday is an indication of two things:

  • 1) their total disregard, no, make that CONTEMPT for both the talent and the listeners who made that station so special, and
  • 2) their INCREDIBLE, Darwin-award-qualifying stupidity.

KSCO extends invitations to all displaced KGO hosts to come to a station owned and operated by HUMANS with good hearts, good souls, and diverse personalities and perspectives-- not by cold corporate weasels and bean counters.

One of those hosts, Dr. Bill Wattenburg, has graciously accepted our invitation; let's see what the others will do.

Join us on the next KSCO Special for a stimulating discussion of this unprecedented talk radio drama, possibly with some of the players in attendance, this Saturday 10 AM to 12 Noon, right here on still proudly a voice for everyone radio AM 1080 KSCO."

Mr.Zwerling, Thanks for your support for all the former talk show hosts from KGO 810! It's nice to know that real broadcasters with a sense of fair play are still in the radio business! You can't go wrong with Dr. Bill, I have been a listener to his show for as long as he has been on KGO. Thanks again for your wonderful support for those displaced by the new management at kgo 810. Are you going to have anyone cover the occupy KGO rally next Thursday morning the 15th of December at 11:30 AM? This will be very interesting for all in the radio business that's for sure! Mark J. It would be great if you could pick up some of the fired KGO hosts. I've started listening to KSCO in the last few days, and would like to have a reason to listen a lot more.

Unfortunately, I can't pick up KSCO-AM in Castro Valley. The internet version is a good substitute except in my car.

I like hosts who are not completely predictable and who can take a somewhat objective point of view. That's why I enjoyed Gene Burns, Gil Gross, and John Rothmann, and sometimes Bill Wattenburg (when he doesn't make me angry!). Len Tillem's show was also great. I can't stand knee-jerk conservatives (Limbaugh, Beck), but I'm also not fond of knee-jerk liberals. KGO had great hosts, and I hope that some of them can find a new home on KSCO.

Will try and listen to selected shows on this station and probably others. However, will NOT listen to hatemongers like Rush Limbaugh. So, we'll see.

I am all for it... Bring the Ex-Kgo team over to KSCO... I was a hard core listener of KGO until Cumulus changed the agenda. The KGO stations is like listening to KCBS now, news all the time 24/7... The annoying thing to me now after listening to KGO for 30 minutes, the news has repeated three to four times...

I look forward to hopefully all the ex KGO team to come over to KSCO. Congrads Dr Bill... I look forward to listening to you again...

Damn, I can't get the station. I am in Pt. Richmond, right on the water, but I still can't get it. I am a former KGO faithful. I inheireted the habit from my parents (85 & 82) who are still listening and passed it on to my kids as well. Hope your signal will reach me later in the evening?

I will not be near a radio tomorrow as I'll be riding in someone else's car who doesn't like to listen to radio, but I will download the podcast with John and, from what I have heard on "Former Listeners of KGO," Gene Burns. Please encourage them to talk about the firings and to say goodbye to their listeners who miss them so much. We need this for closure. But if they take up your offer, I will become a KSCO listener, but it will have to be by podcast, cause I just tried to get you on my radio and your signal doesn't reach.

Thank you for supporting the fired hosts of KGO. I am so pleased the Dr. Wattenburg will be joining your program lineup. I hope others will join your station.
I live in Campbell, and have trouble with radio reception, but at least I can listen via my computer.
I was a listener to KGO for 40 years and still in shock at what happened to my life line of talk by intelligent hosts, that made me think and act and laugh.

I will certainly give you a try. I am heartsick about KGO which was a major part of my evening listening. Your comments are right on and by the way I did give them a chance too and they failed miserably. Who wants solid news regurgitated every half hour constantly and a host who has no local knowledge speaking from who knows where. Thanks for being there. I certainly hope John Rothman and Ray Taglifero are open to your invitations. They are the best.

I heard all of Charley Freedman's show with Dr. Wattenburg. Very entertaining, and informative about a lot of things. Charley always makes me feel a little more intelligent when I listen to him. And this show was a double whammy. I could beg for more, but I'm happy that I got to listen to this even if it was for one time only.

Kudos to you KSCO! It appears as though there are a few time slots that could be made available to any/all of the former KGO talent that would like to come on board. I'm against bumping local talent, but it certainly seems that you could axe the syndicated sensationalisti c anti-American crap that is Rush Limbaugh's program and use the 2-5 am replay slot for live broadcasting. I doubt I'll be up in time to catch the 10am start of Saturday's program, so please put in podcast form. Up until Dec. 1st I was a loyal KGO fan since I came to San Jose in 1982. I've had the pleasure to have met John, Gene, Gil, Dr. Dean, and Ray (and seen Dr. Bill) at KGO Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraisers and auction dinners and events and consider them and their support staff as extended family and want them back on the air ASAP! You have my blessing to steal any of the fine news and weather staff, producers, etc. from what's left of KGO as well!

This is great news and I appreciate that you are spending your time and money to bring these personalities back at your station.

I was extremely dismayed that the corporation that owns KGO made such a draconian move. I listened to KGO for 90% of my commute. That equals about 10 hours a week. Now I listen to them zero percent.

I'm going to be checking to see if I can tune in 1080. I appreciate companies that value people over profit such as yours.

I had not heard of your station before last Saturday when I got the shock when tuning in to KGO to listen to Joanie Greggains as I have almost every Saturday morning for many many years. I joined the FB page Former Listeners of KGO and that is where I saw info about your station and then listened through internet to Dr Bill who talked with you for about 15 minutes. What Cumulus did was cold and heartless to say the least. Thank you for extending your hand to all the talented hosts fired from KGO and I hope at least a few of them take you up on your offer. You are my new radio station...only hope I can get KSCO on my car radio.
Sure, having some of those hosts for your very own will be huge for your business which is great but I can feel that isn't your only reason for the invite....I feel your HEART!

I am so excited to hear about your station being news/talk and interested in picking up some KGO hosts who were terribly treated by KGO. I no longer listen to KGO, have been a faithful listener since the Ira Blue era in the 60's.

I apologize for not knowing much about your station, but I assure you that you have captured another listener. My only concern is that your station reception is great in our vehicles but not so good in our house. I am sure that you may have some plans in the future to increase your wattage.

i'm guessing that you couldn't pay these former KGO hosts anywhere near their previous salaries but what about if you offered them a small cut of the gross or net profits in exchange for building KSCO into a powerhouse talk station? i'm guessing there are a few KSFO hosts that might also get the axe and between the 2 stations hosts you might have an opportunity to put KSCO into elite status if the hosts agree. a lot of people listen via streaming these days so they don't even need to be within range of your signal to hear some of our favorite hosts.

Totally classless behavior from a 'timeless' radio station that suddenly went corporate to save their bottom line... heck, they even hired a token-syndicated conservative for the SAME timeframe as Dr. Bill... and yet, there is no substitute for the local viewpoint and commentary... KGO will fail, spectacularly... they lament being #7? they'll be lucky to be top-20 by end of 2012...

Hear, Hear! Like many, I am stunned at the changes. But I'm glad to see KSCO's response.

As a transplanted San Franciscan, KGO was a little piece of my hometown. If former KGO favorites, (especially Ray, Gene, Gil, and John) can be heard on KSCO, I will be listening in future.

I'm glad to see KSCO has an internet presence, listening live online and podcasts are how I listen.

If the ratings for the talk show hosts on KGO were that bad I can understand why changes had to be made, however the changes made no scenes at all. KGO kept (one in particular) the worst of the bunch and replaced others with new talk show hosts that are not as good. What kind of bone head changes are these?

I listen to KCBS when I want news, but I don't want news all day long! So I will continue to get my news from KCBS and if the talk show host on KSCO have interesting topics, I will tune in, otherwise forget KGO! They took Bob Brinker off, so now I listen to him on KSFO.

I read a report that a listener suggested cancelling the Rush Limbaugh program and substituting for displaced KGO 'talker'.

PLEASE NO.

We have all our cars set to KSCO, primarily so we don't miss Rush if we are in the car ... we have a small business & are in the car frequently.

Len Tillem, by the way, is not the type of host that KSCO deserves.

We deserve a host that is straight-forward, does not try to secure clients for his firm, his cronie's firm or directly lie & mislead the callers. Most importantly, we need a host that is intellectually honest and ethical.

I'm from Canada, now living in Ontario, used to listen to KGO when the F1 and F2 layer would combine at night, back then residing in BC Vancouver. I was a big fan of Mr.Wattenburg on weekends up until the idiocy of KGO earlier this month. I was able to get KGO most of the time at night.I am located in western Oregon.
For what it is worth I personally wrote Cumulus Media headquarters in Atlanta and also directly to KGO and from I read I am not the only upset former listener. I ditto your comments online about the stupidity of KGO releasing there best talent.
Your listeners are lucky to have Mr. Wattenburg's commentary and knowledge on KSCO.

However, after listening to the "discussion" between Kay and Ray this afternoon I would hope that he would not be one of the choices. I respect the man for so many good things that he has done over the years but there is a reason that he was slotted for the wee hours on KGO. He has a loyal following but I think that KSCO would make a huge mistake bringing him onboard. Now, if you want to talk about Gross, Rothman, Burns or Dr. Bill we are talking about a whole different issue. The only way that Ray would remotely fit in would be a slot similar to what he had at KGO and you would most certainly piss off a lot of loyal Coast to Coast listeners should that happen.

Ray T is much superior then Coast to Coast. C to C is also available on hundreds of stations and is available because lack of availability of anything better. Its cheaper then having your own talk show host and production crew etc, I am sure that is the case. Well, to get all these ex KGO people will need deep pockets and station which is ready to step up.
It can be modified to 2 hours of talk shows with one hour gaps in between to cut cost etc, not sure how it can be made profitable. One thing is certain , KGO has shot itself in feet and is bound to fall hard in dirt.

We are eagerly awaiting listening to the podcasts for both John Rothmann on 12/14/11 and Ray Taliaferro on 12/15/11, but are VERY DISAPPOINTED that they have not been posted here. Please make them available as soon as possible - many, many people are wanting to hear them and we're wondering where they are. I totally agree with Ray - Donald Trump is a complete hypocritical idiot, and we do need universal health care in this country just like in Europe, Canada, and most of the modern civilized nations. If Kay has so much confusion over it, why don't you help her watch Michael Moore's movie "Sicko" - maybe it will help shed some light on the subject. Given the choice between listening to 90 year old Kay rant about her ignorance or Ray about what is actually true, I pick Ray. Ray - yes; Kay no.

I take issue with your comments on Ray. The fact is that the reason Ray was on nights at KGO is because he asked for it not because he was thrown on to it. Ray would also be a booming success for late night. Ray carried a huge audience, more than you all know or realize. All the guys at KGO who got axed are great but Ray is the Greatest.

I think the idea that Maureen suggested (on another thread), that of a Kay and Ray show, maybe once a week, would be a big hit. I disagree that it would be a mistake to bring Ray on board. Ray has a big, big following. Yes, not everybody likes Ray. Not everybody likes Rush. And not everybody likes Kay! But since when does a radio station have to put on only people that everyone likes? When has that ever happened? I didn't like every host on KGO, but I was glad to have them all there. And thank you, Michael, for being so on top of this recent brouhaha and being a place for KGO listeners to vent and to hear our favorite talk radio hosts who were so shabbily treated by the new management! WTG!

Micky luckoff and the team at KGO spent 30+ years building something great only to see these morons come in and trash it within a fraction of that time....
It's always easier for management to attempt to look good buy cutting costs.... never build/sell something to improve the companies condition. I have seen this first hand being in the newspaper industry, and see it in so many businesses where new management really doesn't understand nor wish to put forth effort to improve the business by smarts...instead of simply chopping....short term thinking IMO.

KGO will become just another right wing broadcaster with all begging to be Limbaugh wannabees. I strongly urge you to get your station on I(heart)radio.com. I travel CA often late at night and always listened to KGO on I(heart)radio. I will listren to you if I can on my Iphone on the net too.

RE Ray Taliaferro. I cannot stand the arrogant old fool and was thrilled to hear he was let go. He would be one reason to NOT listen to KCSO. I strongly urge you to not pick him up.

The rest of the KGO family, particularly Wattenberg and part timer Christine Craft are all great broadcasters.

seems like KSCO is trying to get ex KGO listeners to defect to KSCO but not hiring any KGO hosts on a full time basis. i listened to KSCO for a week, maybe i am too much into KGO, i just do not find the same ambiance at KSCO. i do however, like Bill Wattenburg's guest host programming. judging from Gene Burns and Len Tillem joing KKSF, i don't think KSCO will pick up Gil, John, two of the hosts i like.

After reading Tom's post, I am tempted to agree with him. I respect Ray's voice and what he has to say. Sometimes, I think he's the sharpest pencil in the box, but the way he says things can feel pedantic and condescending, and very repetitive. I know he had a loyal following at KGO and I often think of those people who listened late at night as being part of his family. I think their loss and his is enormous and if you have a slot similar to the one he held at KGO, that's exactly where I'd put him, because I know he is sorely missed and the insomniacs out there who needed the sound of his voice, as well as what he said, would be so grateful.

Gene Burns a fine and wonderful gentleman would be a great asset. Ray is a mess though I love him and have listened to him for decades. When Bernie Ward gets out I personally will offer him band-with on the internet if he wishes to have an internet presence, despite his issues there is not a finer political commentator in the United States. I just wanted to send a thank you to the staff and owners of KSCO for making airtime available to former KGO radio hosts. It has been a really amazing turn of events for the former audience of KGO. This has made me realize what a predicament that the media is in with the 1996 Telecommunicati ons act. It is a frighting prospect to think that such a small handful of big corporations are controlling every aspect of our media. This is not just a concern for KGO or it's listeners but also a concern for your listeners as well. Is it not just as possible for this to happen to your station as it was for KGO? I think this would make a good subject for discussion.

I agree with Tom's comment on 2011-12-15. I listen to KSFO, KGO's sister station, most of the time here in Morgan Hill, but used to tune in KGO for certain shows before the format change. Dr. Bill Wattenburg would get me to listen to KSCO. Ray Taliaferro would keep me away: Whenever Dr. Bill's show ended for the night and Ray came on, I'd turn off or tune out. I don't necessarily agree with Dr. Bill's political views, but his position as an experienced, smart engineer, answering technology questions and explaining bureaucratic ineptitude in dealing with technology, was a jewel in KGO's program schedule, as far as I'm concerned. I love Coast to Coast AM, which conflicted with KGO's scheduling of Dr. Bill on weekends, but life is filled with choices, and sometimes I'd choose Dr. Bill instead of George Noory.

Unbelievable move on their end I must say! I have been listening to KGO from the mid 70's. They were not only my source of news, they were my source of what I could consider the other side of what I thought. Not good, not bad, just the other side. KGO has dropped the ball and I can't tell you how pleased that KCSO has picked it up and is running with it. Unfortunately I'm in San Jose and can't get you. Guess its time to invest in what Dr. Bill has been talking about for years, the CC radio.

Hey, your Saturday 9 AM - NOON show is pretty good too. Definitely worth a listen to hear the boss or GM discuss the workings of the radio station. Don't often get to hear that.


Also, it will be great to hear Dr. Bill from NOON - 2 PM as well as there isn't too much there exc Tom Sullivan or Hannity and Dr. Bill is better than them by quite a bit. Would it be possible for Dr. Bill to do his old 10 PM to 1 AM shows on the weekends again? Listening to that show is a tradition for so many of us on the west coast and while the George Noory show is decent, its available all over the dial. I'd bet if Dr. Bill did that show again he could recapture a significant % of that audience again because of that availability of internet streaming these days. He's like a tradition in that time on the weekends.

I listen to the radio in the early morning (6am to 8am,) when I go to bed and whenever I am in my car. Please keep Coast to Coast. When I can't sleep(which is often) I listen. Have been a fan since the early Art Bell days. I wouldn't mind if you dropped Limbaugh. Years ago he had a sense of humor, but he is boring now. I like John Rothman. He is left of me but is always courteous to other points of view, and very knowledgeable. I really would not listen to Taliafarro ever! Stopped listening to him years ago. He was rude, opinionated and racist in my view. Would hate to hear him on KSCO.

I was a staunch KGO listener from way back when. As it got more liberal and KSFO came into view I left KGO except for Dr. Bill and that was a "must". KSFO is also teetering and KKSF (formerly KNEW) isn't all that great, so where does that leave the Bat Area? Too bad your station doesn't come in here in Hayward. I'm slowly moving into FM radio.

Can't believe it! I've found KSCO and Dr. Wattenburg. Though I live in the San Diego and Palm Desert areas, I can listen to this station via streaming, and I will support the station's sponsors. I am here in the Seattle and when I was up and down at night I really enjoyed Ray see I drove bus in the east bay do not rem Ray T but I sure do miss him and Dr Bill now can I stream you st and listen to Ray and Dr Bill So get Ray T on the air I only stream KGO on the news but the talk show on Red Eye sucks now if they was going that way then way fire all the talk show host in the first place does not make sense to me as I spent 12 years in the bay aera David in Seattle 206 5463492 ask Ray if he has the 2 CDS I sent him and if he can promote m in the bay aera some how he will know I play the accordion. give hime my no have him call me.

Re: Ray Taliaferro. I am surprised the FCC never sanctioned KGO for Ray's slurs, foul, and racist language.

I made several complaints to KGO, and downloaded the audio of some of his most offensive hours from KGO's download page.

Mr. Zwerling, I'll make this audio available to you if you are seriously considering signing on Ray.

I have never liked Ray T, and said as much earlier in this thread. THAT SAID, I would take Ray T. ANYDAY over the psuedoscience of Coast-To-Coast. It's like the difference betwewn watching an ardent amateurish high school wrestling match (Ray T) and watching fake Hulk Hogan schlock wrestling (Coast-to-Coast A.M. Give me the real thing, anyday. Seriously, if you can get Ray T overnight, do it.

Michael, if somehow you could get your signal to be heard in the bay area, I believe your station could be a gold mine. I work in the bay area during the week...and just can get your signal on the radio. Am home in Mont Bay on weekends...it's loud and clear. As for programming...sure you heard it...too much infomercial. Week in review is boring...they're trying to hard and it's not working...just tell them to really be themselves. Dave Allen is quirky...which is entertaining but sometimes you want to say...hey, at least be coherent...even his guests. The old Steve Martin line...."it's important to the listener to have a point!...it's much more interesting to the listener!" Take care....kick it up a notch and be able to blast to the bay area!!!!

Thank you for the letter to KGO listeners. I have listened to KGO for 40 years! The last 12 years, I've listened online in Europe. I miss John Rothman the most. In any case, I'll be tuning into one of the best, Len Tillum! Good luck to you all at KSCO!

Ad hominem attacks are Ray's specialty. Too bad, because in my opinion, Kay's argument was so flimsy a cogent person could make great points and win hearts and minds. Ray, with his meglamaniacal bullying, just makes everybody wince, as if all the sudden we're in a dysfunctional family and the dad is again incredibly inappropriate to mom and we pretend not to see.Why does the public accept this? It's ridiculous. He's made millions off his insecure narcissistic rants.

I was looking for a station to stream Rush on my iPhone. I discovered your fine station and local flavor. Dr Bill was a favorite on that other station. I am originally from Sacramento and was a long time listener to the other station. I am now in Washington and am so happy to be able to listen.

I have to agree with one of the comments, I live in Yuba City and I can not get KSCO 1080. I truly enjoyed Dr Bill on KGO the time slot was great 10PM-1AM, I looked forwarded to Fri,Sat and Sun nights for his show. I will be listening on the net, and looking forward to your news letter, hopefully with a schedule. Thanks again. I miss Dr Bill, and think the new KGO SUX.....

Kudos to you for picking up on the KGO fallout (pun intended). I may not agree with Ray T. but at least he is still able to say his mind. And, isn't this what its all about? I just wish your website had a little easier set of buttons so I could send Dr. Bill an email. I want to help him fix his Cummins...he'll know what I mean.

Yes, please. I loved KGO for 27 years and would love to hear any of the wonderful hosts that left...except for that narcissist Ray Taliafierro. He's a talented pianist, I'm sure he gives generously to charity, and lots of things, but his constant anger and self aggrandizing were just so hard to listen to. It felt like I lost my best friends when KGO morphed into the lower life form that it is now.
