Although Harvey Milk Day is officially this coming Saturday May 22nd (which would have been Milk’s 91st birthday) schools throughout Santa Cruz county raised the pride flag for the first time in history this week, and a celebration was held in Milk’s honor at Santa Cruz High School yesterday. The pride flag will continue to fly through the end of this month….and next month (which is Pride Month).
Harvey Milk was well known as the first openly-gay elected official in California when he served on the San Francisco Board Of Supervisors in the 1970s. Milk advocated for L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. rights, education and inclusivity. He was assassinated in November of 1978.
