A depth constraint has been added to where commercial crabbing can take place. In some areas off the California Coast, commercial crab fisherman must have their traps at 30 fathoms or less….so as to try and avoid entangling whales. That’s because the Humpback and Blue Whales are returning from their winter breeding grounds. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be monitoring all available data, and is expected to do their next risk assessment on (or around) May 14th. Zone closures are possible in the coming weeks.
