On Friday, Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County issued a reminder to the public about April being Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The following tips are offered to prevent distractions on the road:
- Program your GPS, playlist, or electronics and finish your texts and emails.
- Turn “Do Not Disturb” on your phone and put it in a glovebox, purse, or other hidden space.
- Do not adjust your touchscreen-based radio or entertainment systems while driving.
- Schedule breaks for long distance travel.
Between January of March of this year, Central Fire responded to 53 different vehicle accidents, many of which could have been avoided with a decrease in distracted drivers.
In 2019, distracted driving was the cause of death for over 3,000 people nationwide.
