Good – which means non-rainy – weather has Caltrans construction at Big Sur two months ahead of its target date. Highway 1 closed in January after big rains washed 150-feet of roadway off the hill.
Caltrans is repairing the chasm using engineered fill rather than building a bridge. Each layer of fil l will be tamped down to make sure it can withstand the weight of the highway.
The total cost of repairs sits at $11.5 million.
