A Modesto police officer has been fired, criminally charged, and arrested. He is accused of killing a man after responding to a 911 call.
An investigation found that “the conduct and use of deadly force by Officer Joseph Lamantia was in violation of the Modesto Police Department’s policies, procedures, and training, resulting in a recommendation to terminate Officer Lamantia’s employment with the City of Modesto,” the Modesto Police Department said in a news release.
29-year-old Trevor Seever was killed by Lamantia on Dec. 29 after police said they received a call from a woman saying that her brother told their family he bought a gun and was making “vague threats.” Police said they later determined Seever did not have a gun.
Body camera video shows Lamantia getting out of his car and running towards the suspect. Lamantia is heard telling Seever several times, “put your hands up” and “get on the ground,” and several shots are fired at Seever shortly after.
Police were seen providing medical aid after the shooting.
