People who are still feeding the wild birds are asked to stop doing so….at least until the end of this month. That’s because Pine Siskins (who have been wintering here), and other small songbirds, are getting sick and dying from Salmonellosis….which oftens spreads when birds congregate at bird feeders, because birds shed the bacteria in their feces (which lands on the feeder, and on the seed and ground below the feeders).
Because of that people are asked to remove and clean their wild bird feeders, and put them away until the Pine Siskins continue their migration by leaving the area. People are also encouraged to report sick or dying birds to the S.P.C.A.
