The 44-mile closure of Highway 1 is becoming a 23 mile closure. That’s because the closure points have been moved closer together. They are now at 11 miles north of the San Luis Obispo county line at Willow Creek Road, and about 34 miles north of the San Luis Obispo county line at the South Coast Center. The 150-foot wide gap in highway 1 at rat creek (2 miles south of Esalen Institute) is within that closure. Cal-Trans crews are continuing to work to fully assess the damage at Rat Creek. A 24-hour traffic control site will be set up at each of the road closure sites, to allow only local residents to return and assess damage to their homes. Cal-Trans crews are continuing to work on a full assessment of the damage.
