Following the CZU August Lightning Complex Fire, mudslides like that of Montecito are a concern for Santa Cruz County residents.
In an interview on KSCO, Bruce McPherson, fifth district supervisor of Santa Cruz County discussed how the county is preparing for this possibility as we approach winter.
“The biggest issue we’re dealing with right now is the likelihood of debris flow in the burn zone,” McPherson stated.
“I organized a conference call, we had over 19 people from county and state governments [and] geologists. We’re working to avoid what happened in Montecito. We’re going to be proactive about evacuations. We’re [going to] have zones, and then we’re going to have evacuation routes. [We are] trying to plan this as best as we can, it’s serious because there’s just not enough time to get everything cleared and clean so to speak.”
McPherson went on to urge the importance of evacuating, even if having to do so multiple times during this winter season, and further townhall-style meetings involving a broad and extensive list of agencies on local, state, and national levels will be announced later this week.
