Statewide Flex Alert Issued Today 08-14-20 03:32 DC

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) has issued a statewide Flex Alert for today.

ISO is asking people across the state to voluntarily conserve electricity from 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 14.

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat watches and warnings for portions of California. A heat advisory has been issued for parts of Santa Cruz County and an excessive heat warning has been issued for most of San Benito and Monterey Counties.

Prolonged heat over several consecutive days is expected to drive electricity demand higher, as nighttime temperatures are also forecast to be above average.

The ISO recommends people use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. and set air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.

A Flex Alert is issued by the ISO when the electricity grid is under stress because of generation or transmission outages, or from persistent hot temperatures
