The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office yesterday filed a criminal complaint against the man accused of killing a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy and shooting two other police officers.
32-year-old Steven Carrillo was arrested Saturday after the officers were shot while attempting to take him into custody.
Carrillo is scheduled for arraignment in a Santa Cruz County Superior Courtroom later today (Friday). He is being held at the Monterey County Jail.
Carillo, an Air Force staff sergeant, is facing 19 charges. They include:
- murder
- six charges of attempted murder
- two charges for the use of explosions with intent to murder
- use of an explosive to cause bodily injury
- carjacking
- assault on a firefighter
- two counts of attempted car jacking
- possession of an unregistered, loaded and concealed gun
- two charges for possession of ingredients to make a destructive device
- two charges of possession of a destructive and explosive device with intent to injure or destroy.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was shot and killed in Ben Lomond by Carrillo. A second deputy was shot in the chest, struck by shrapnel and struck by a vehicle. He was listed in critical but stable condition. A CHP officer was shot in the hand.
Gutzwiller was a 14-year veteran of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office and leaves behind a pregnant wife and a 2-year-old son.
