A group, known as “Preserve Our Rural Communities” will now have some time to see if they can gather signatures for a referendum, to see if they can stop a proposed charitable project from being constructed near the intersection of Highway 101 and Betabel Road. P.O.R.C. has been fighting development on the Highway 101 Corridor since before San Benito County Supervisors approved a zoning change in 4 locations along the 101 corridor. With increasing traffic issues through that corridor, many people have expressed concerns that large shopping centers and residential growth could be approved in those areas….and they say that the highway isn’t wide enough to deal with the pre-Covid-19-pandemic traffic….much less handling even more traffic. The proposed Betabel Road Project is designed to look like a 1950’s vintage roadside stop, with a motel, gas station, restaurant, barn to sell local goods and produce, a Historic River Walk, and a San Benito County Visitor’s Center.
