Salinas Police Arrest Suspect in Homeless Camp Murder 05-08-20 04:10 DC

Salinas police have taken an 18-year-old man into custody on murder, attempted murder, and gang charges related to a shooting last Friday afternoon.

Responding officers found two people shot just before 5:30 p.m. last Friday. The incident took place at a homeless camp in the wooded area east of the County Yard facility in the 800 block of East Laurel Drive.

One of the victims died at the scene. The other, a 53-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he is expected to survive.

Thursday afternoon, police arrested 18-year-old John Barriga Macias when they stopped him on N. Main Street near Russell Road at about 1:45 p.m.

Macias was booked into the Monterey County Jail.
