The Monterey City Council yesterday decided to delay a decision laying off more than 80 current employees until next Wednesday.
The council is getting push back from employee unions that say the city’s emergency fund should be used before jobs are cut.
The staff cut is intended to fight a multi-million-dollar projected city deficit.
The positions that could be cut are in places including the Conference Center, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the library. These locations are all closed under the shelter-in-place order.
The council also considered a $1.6 million stimulus plan that would provide payments to businesses and residents.
The City Local Economic Recovery Plan would use $1 million to bail out struggling small businesses. $600,000 would be used as a rent payment assistance program for Monterey residents.
