The radio station known as Monterey Oldies signing off last week was the final step for donating the Cannery Row-based station and the property around it.
Some may know this station as “Unforgettable 1240” back when it featured jazz.
KNRY was a radio station founded in the Monterey bay area in 1935.
Over the years, it changed formatting multiple times, from jazz, to classical and alternative rock prior to settling on oldies in early 2015, rebranding it as “Monterey Oldies”.
According to a representative from Mount Wilson… KNRY, when it was originally known under the call sign KMBY was once home of the broadcasting icon Robert W Morgan. In it’s final days, it was a simulcast of L.A. Oldies, featuring the original Disco Saturday Night, Sunday Night 70s program and an encore of Dick Clarke’s Rock, Roll, & Remember.
The station was originally donated to the Balanced Radio Foundation from Mount Wilson Broadcasters, it’s previous owner, in November of last year.
While other Mount Wilson-owned stations in the Monterey Bay Area such as KNRYs FM translator (AKA K240EV) went offline shortly after the November announcement, KNRY was the final holdout, and will be dearly missed by fans of 50s through 80s music within the Monterey Bay area.
