Newsom Urges CA Residents to Avoid Big Events, Considers Cruise Changes 03-11-20 14:47 DC

Gov. Gavin Newsom has urged Californians to avoid sporting events, large events, and concerts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Newsom also strongly urged the elderly to avoid cruise ships while the state considers rules to restrict cruise travel off the California coast.

The warning came as Newsom announced an update to the painstaking process of disembarking more than 2,000 passengers from a cruise ship struck by the coronavirus and moving them to military bases around the U.S. for a two-week quarantine.

Three people have died and 157 Californians have tested positive so far for the coronavirus. That number does not include cruise ship evacuees in Oakland. Newsom said he expects the number of COVID-19 patients to significantly rise as more test kits become available.

Meanwhile, the TSA reported Tuesday that three of its officers at San Jose International Airport have tested positive for COVID-19.
