Santa Cruz County businesses will soon be required to charge customers 25 cents for single-use disposable cups.
The charge, which becomes effective July 1st, 2020 was approved today (Tuesday) by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. The new rule applies only to businesses in unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz county.
County officials hope the charge will encourage people to bring their own cups, much as the use of disposable bags has been impacted by charging for them. It is estimated that about 50 million single-use cups are thrown away in Santa Cruz County every year.
