Monterey County supervisor Luis Alejo announced this afternoon on Twitter that Monterey County has become the first county in the state to pass a temporary ban on no-fault evictions.
Alejo said the board of supervisors passed the ban unanimously, and it will protect tenants until a new state law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.
Monterey County is actually at least the second county to pass such interim protection. Santa Cruz County passed its version on November 5th.
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 1482, which prevents landlords from gouging rent and evicting tenants without just cause.
The new law is intended to prevent property managers are evicting low-income tenants before AB 1482 takes effect on January 1.
