Ross Survival Camp Not Welcome 11-13-19 04:17 DC

The City of Santa Cruz said Tuesday that it has “not authorized any form of shelter campsite at Gateway Plaza.” This is the location also known as the Ross camp.

In a Facebook post, the city said it is “actively reaching out” to those camping at the site to offer safe alternative places for them to stay.

Homeless people began moving back into the former campsite over the weekend. It was closed last May over health and safety concerns.

City officials said there are two alternative sites that offer safe places to stay for those who are experiencing homelessness. They say both sites have current vacancies and are operated by the Salvation Army.

Advocates for the homeless said the Ross camp is being occupied because Santa Cruz does not provide enough housing for homeless people.
