as of today, (THURS) earthquake warning alerts are available to all California residents over their smartphones.
“my shake,” a smartphone app available for iPhones and Android devices, detects the start of an earthquake and immediately sends a warning to phones in areas where the quake might be felt.
Developed by the University of California at Berkeley, the free software alerts only on earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater.
Thursday’s debut coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake as well as the annual Great Shakeout safety drill.
