THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD IS CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS WITH THE SURVIVORS OF MONDAY’S DEADLY BOAT FIRE OFF THE COAST OF SANTA CRUZ ISLAND.
INVESTIGATORS ARE NO CLOSER TO FINDING THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE BUT THERE WERE NO SMOKE DETECTORS IN THE AREA THAT WOULD HAVE ALERTED THE CREW TO THE BLAZE… SMOKE DETECTORS WERE NOT REQUIRED WHEN THE “CONCEPTION” WAS BUILT.
34 PEOPLE DIED WHEN THE BOAT ERUPTED INTO A FIREBALL WHILE THE PASSENGERS SLEPT. THE NTSB IS ALSO LOOKING INTO WHETHER OR NOT THERE WERE ENOUGH FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES ON BOARD… INCLUDING FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.
MEANWHILE…ON THURSDAY, THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE CONCEPTION FILED SUIT IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT UNDER A PRE-CIVIL WAR PROVISION OF MARITIME LAW THAT ALLOWS IT TO LIMIT ITS LIABILITY.
