New Rules for Power Cuts to Prevent Wildfires 05-30-19 17:20 DC 5

The California Public Utilities Commission today (Thursday) approved rules for when utilities can cut electricity during high winds and low humidity to prevent wildfires..

Regulators say utilities need to do a better job educating and notifying the public, especially in vulnerable areas, as they widen preventative power outages this summer.Some entire cities could be impacted when major high-tension lines, such as the one found responsible for last years’ Camp Fire that wiped out the town of Paradise in Plumas County.

Utility Commissioners also approved utilities’ wildfire prevention plans. Those include cutting back vegetation and improving electric lines.
