An effort to protect local Indian lore stalls a maintenance project for the Mission Hill railroad tunnel.
The tunnel is used by the Roaring Camp Railroad and runs underneath the parking lot of Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz. It also happens to be the ancient burial site of the Ohlone Indians.
A local group concerned about the disturbance of the burial ground protested the excavation work by roaring camp… and that prompted the city to get involved. For now, it seems the Felton railroad company hired an archeologist to monitor the work and it looks like the maintenance project will move forward.
